Cavalry Song

there's always war
it's always been
the history is clear
and clean
as lily-whitened General's hands
as every leader understands
some people love the sight of blood
and bodies spattered in the mud
that's why they show them every day
on telly, safe and far away
and foreign
not in our back yard
yet never show the battle scarred
collateral damage
friendly fire
simulations
as the wire
pops and bubbles
scraps of militarily approved
reports of death
all too exaggerated
which direction
no-one knows
which way this wind of
strikes and blows
pre-emptive and reactive
goes

there's always peace
it's in between
the periods of grief and madness
after the destruction
and the generations born in sadness
fifty years
isn't really bad
in the whole scheme of things
before the world erupts
into this war of
barren oil kings
and no it doesn't have to be
let's tell that to the cavalry
