in heaven's name they do not even need
to hide the truth from us
for no-one sees or even wants to try
to take this tangle we call world
and make it other
when we say we do
that isn't what we mean
oh no
it's always something else
desire for power, lust for flesh
a wish for justice
something local
and essentially irrelevant
the cruel trick is not the
hordes who having learned
a little human weakness
use it,
nor the gods and demons
clad in human form among us
playing god-like (or demonic)
games -- oh no
it is, instead, the unchanged
truth that we conspire
every day together
making sure that
anyone who even
glimpses half a flash of
light reflected from the
chains that bind us
is by definition then the enemy
to be avoided
self-jailed race of stooping giants
hopping
one eye closed
both ears sealed shut
you get the picture
not the message
never that
and nor do i
though i endeavour to deny it
(it's the main thing that we have
in common
that
and death)
